So, as I have nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon and the children are staying fairly quiet at the moment, I got to thinking about one of my favorite subjects, the touring caravan. So many years of selling touring caravan insurance must have started to ‘rub off’!

The questions I have been thinking about is “Which is the biggest touring caravan available and which is the smallest touring caravan?”. Obviously, selling caravan insurance does also make me consider the question “Can we at Cover4Caravans sell touring caravan insurance for the biggest and smallest touring caravan?” (…well, those that have read my articles before know that I am not shy about the odd insurance plug but after all, it is our blog!). For answers to both of these questions (well, my answers anyway), read on…

After an hour of unbridled internet searching, I think I have found the answer to the first question… the Goliath of the touring caravan World is the Fleetwood Terry 320DBHS with the capacity to sleep 12. Being an American touring caravan, the official brochure does try and avoid any potential owners suing for libel by stating that the touring caravan’s sleeping capacity is a variable number and is affected by items such as size of occupant. So it sleeps 12 quite small people. The 320 is not the heaviest touring caravan in the Fleetwood range having a weight of 9,600lbs, but is the longest at a whopping 34’8”. The interior is fully air conditioned and has a lounge diner that is as big as most small houses.

Now to the smallest touring caravan. Those touring caravan aficionados out there will already be shouting the name at the page… it is, of course, the classic cult touring caravan, the TAB 320RS or teardrop caravan. With a length of 15’5” and weighing only 1,212 lbs, the TAB touring caravan is the smallest I have been able to find. What features does this touring caravan have? Well, to quote the literature… errrm… it’s groovy. That seems to be enough for most teardrop owners.

Which touring caravan would I choose? To be honest, neither. I couldn’t get the kids into the TAB touring caravan (although sometimes this would be a benefit) and I don’t think they have made any roads big enough baring the 4 lane stretch of the M25 to fit the Fleetwood. Something in-between would suit me fine.
