Hi all, hope all is well and that you are looking forward to the weekend, despite the cold! Will be going to the Dagenham-Wycombe game tomorrow which to my surprise is a top of the table clash!
Continuing the theme of Caravan thefts and the reduction of therein, I thought I would jot down some advice gathered form various sources.
Locks
1. Immobilise your Touring caravan, even if you’re stopping only for a short time in a service station. Use good quality padlocks, heavy-duty chains and hitch locks to secure your Touring caravan. Fix lock nuts or wheel clamps to the wheels and padlock gas cylinders to fixing clamps. Our Insurance requirements are the hitchlock and wheel clamp.
Alarms
2. Fit an alarm and switch it on every time you leave your Touring caravan – even if it’s just for a short time. The thieves are very prepared and organized, don’t give them an easy time!
Keys
3. Lock windows, doors, rooflights and the gas compartment when you leave the Touring caravan, whatever the time scale. Always keep the keys with you.
Valuables
4. Take all valuables with you when you leave the Touring caravan. If you can’t, lock them away. Never leave anything on display as thieves will take anything – even an old jumper can tempt a thief to have a closer look.
Papers
5. Never leave the vehicle registration documents in the Touring caravan. They can help a thief to sell the Touring caravan on and the theft may come to light months after the original theft.
Marks
6. If your Touring caravan does not already have a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched onto the windows you should use an ultraviolet pen to mark it inside with an identifiable number. Security mark all the valuables you usually take on holiday with you too.
Neighbours
7. Get to know your neighbours on the site when you’re on holiday and think about joining a vehicle watch scheme at home. This is very similar to a neighbourhood watch scheme at home, another good idea if your Tourer is on the drive.
Tracking
8. You could fit a tracking device so that your Touring caravan can be tracked by the police or a system operator if it is stolen. This may cost a lot of money but with the amount of investment that you have made it will give you peace of mind.
We at Cover4Caravans remain as committed as ever to help our clients in the event of a theft, and we will gladly give any advice on the subject.
Happy caravanning!
