Most people that have a tourer will agree that touring caravan insurance is critically important to their peace of mind. If you are under-insured and are unlucky enough to have an accident, then the costs incurred in things such as repairs and replacement could make a serious dent in your personal finances.

The insurance providers

There are a number of different companies providing touring caravan insurance. They may be considered as falling into two categories:

  • those that specialise in caravans and caravan related insurance;
  • those that cover a wide range of insurance of which caravans are just a part.

It may be that specialists have a broader understanding of the issues and worries of a typical touring caravan owner and a wider range of possible solutions to hand. They typically will know the markets well and should be well placed to provide advice and guidance.

Conditions and exclusions

All insurance, irrespective of what it is covering, will have terms, conditions and exclusions.

It makes sense to ensure that you understand fully what these mean as they may play a major part in any future claim. If you find that you do not understand them, you should not hesitate to ask the provider for an explanation.

In the case of touring caravan cover, it may be worth noting that some policies may demand that you:

  • fit hitchlocks and wheel clamps/immobilisers when the caravan is unhitched;
  • install specialist locks and other security devices to doors and windows;
  • remove external fittings (typically awnings) if the caravan is parked and unattended;
  • only park in authorised parking spots – possibly also under supervision;
  • remove all contents of particularly high value from the caravan when unattended;
  • restrict the numbers and ages of people that will be allowed to tow the caravan.

Positive incentives

Of course, touring caravan insurance providers may also be able to offer incentives as well as applying conditions!

You may find that you will be able to obtain premium reductions if you join a recognised and approved motoring or caravanning association. Many insurers see this as a sign of maturity and responsibility.

You may also be able to obtain cheaper caravan cover if you restrict the mileage you plan to do each year and/or the number of times you plan to take your vehicle outside of the UK.

All these things and others may be worth looking for when you’re selecting your insurance. They could end up saving you significant amounts of money on your touring caravan insurance – and that’ll mean more money available for using on your trips themselves!
