There is little doubt that, since the end of 2007, good news for caravanners and caravan insurance providers (or anyone else for that matter) has been in rather short supply.
Although the various economic crises have resulted in something of a resurgence of the caravanning holiday, this has tended to be more than offset by the apparently never-ending series of gloomy predictions about what lies ahead for the economy.
However, it is good to see that some people are beginning to invest money in their belief that the re-discovery of caravanning is not just a temporary phenomenon.
News has come that Haven Holidays are planning to invest approximately £40 million in upgrading and enhancing several of their caravan sites*.
This includes the provision of new water park and entertainment facilities designed to attract increasing numbers of family holidaymakers and their caravans.
Of course, as the old saying goes, “one swallow does not a summer make” but this announcement just has to be seen as a relatively rare example of recent good economic news.
The above-mentioned previously seen indications of an upturn in the UK caravanning market, as a result of people choosing to stay at home in the UK for the holidays, has always been something of a double-edged sword.
That’s because, there may have always been a slight tendency to think that people were staying in the UK, not because they wished to, but simply because they could no longer afford to go overseas for the holiday.
The implication there would be that, when and if the economy improves, UK holidaymakers would again disappear en-masse for the continent. It was not really a case of the UK holding its own against the attractions offered by other destinations.
In a sense, the economic crises and their effects on the UK holiday economy were always a potential opportunity for the UK holiday marketplace to do something to capture the increased traffic that had, perhaps fortuitously, come its way.
It is good to see that somebody appears to be getting the message and is seeking to upgrade their facilities with a view to, not only encouraging new visitors, but to try and ensure they keep those they have picked up in recent years.
