No sooner has the New Year begun then we are greeted by the first images of caravans floating away on floodwaters in one part of the country or another.

One recent example* arose when a river flooded causing considerable damage to an adjacent car and caravan park.

Although the BBC news item gives no details as to any caravans damaged, it is nevertheless a timely reminder of the importance of caravan insurance.

If that statement causes you to complacently sit back and tell yourself that you don’t need to worry because you already have caravan insurance, then you may need to take a quick reality check in terms of your existing policy.

The reminder for caravan cover applies not only to anyone who is using a caravan without insurance but equally to those who are not entirely clear as to whether or not their policy covers flood perils.

The position may vary considerably between policies and is not easy to summarise, however, there are a few points that you may wish to keep in mind:

  • some policies may cover damage due to flooding – but sometimes only in situations where you have parked or sited your caravan on a site that has no previous history of flooding and which is not listed by the local authorities and environmental agencies as being at high flood risk;
  • yet other policies may offer cover but only if the site is a formally designated one, meaning that (e.g.) casual riverside parking of tourers in flood-risk areas may put elements of your cover at risk.

In a brief article of this nature, it is not really possible to discuss all possible scenarios and situations.  The caravan cover provided under the terms and conditions of your policy may also influence the exact position for you considerably.

All that can be said is that news items such as the one referenced below, should serve to remind any caravanner of the risks that large bodies of water may pose to their caravan.

Checking the detail of the protection provided by your caravan insurance policy, against such situations, may be important – and that should also include a quick review of related terms and conditions.
