Comparatively few people may enjoy paying out each year for their caravan insurance (or any other form of insurance for that matter) and with December being such an expensive month in terms presents and parties, every penny really counts.

Yet such cover may be essential in terms of protecting a major financial asset and in some cases, actually a legal requirement.

So, if your caravan cover is coming up for renewal this month, why not give yourself the Christmas present of getting the most suitable cover at a cost-effective price?

The following pointers should help you when thinking about your existing insurance or renewing your caravan cover:

  • it hopefully goes without saying that if you are driving a motorhome (broadly speaking, defined as being a vehicle with integral accommodation) then by law you typically must have, as a minimum cover, third party liability protection;

  • even if your motorhome is notionally off-road and not in use, insurance is typically still required, unless you have made a SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification) declaration to the DVLA and received their confirmation that it has been processed;

  • for other types of caravan, caravan insurance may not be a legal requirement even if it remains typically highly advisable and policy types exist to cover things such as static caravans, park homes, trailer tents, collapsible caravans and touring caravans – we can now even help you with insurance for German Hobby caravans, something, which historically, owners of these models may have found to be a challenge;

  • policies are typically not transferable and if, for example, you dispose of a touring caravan and replace it with a trailer tent, you cannot assume that your existing insurance for touring caravans will cover your new camping configuration;

  • in these days of increased uncertainty regarding global weather patterns, it may be more common to find clauses and conditions in policies relating to where you park or site your caravan when it is in use – it is typically important to comply with any such conditions if you are to avoid putting your cover at risk;

  • theft is, unfortunately, an ever-present risk for both caravan owners and caravan insurance providers but the good news is that some policies may offer incentives in the form of discounts if you follow sensible theft-reduction measures (some of these, such as the use of hitchlocks and wheel clamps may be obligatory in some tourer insurance policies);

  • if you own a static caravan, you may occasionally encounter pressures from site owners to purchase their own insurance policy, however, this may not typically be obligatory and you may find that more cost-effective cover might be available from direct insurance sources;

  • even if you have a caravan insurance policy that you have held for a number of years, it may be advisable to try and find the time to periodically review it against other options available in the insurance market – you may be surprised at how things have moved on and the newer options available to you.

Hopefully these considerations will help you save some money on your caravan insurance cover – Happy Christmas!

You may be considering a static caravan insurance quote for any one of several reasons, including:

  • you are in the process of purchasing a static caravan;
  • you are considering such a purchase and wish to do some sums relating to the annual running and maintenance costs;
  • you are an existing owner that is dissatisfied with your current policy or caravan insurance provider;
  • you are an existing owner that is content with your existing cover but simply wish to check whether or not it is still competitive in terms of the overall marketplace.

Whatever your motivations and objectives, getting a static caravan insurance quote is typically straightforward.

An insurance provider will need a relatively basic set of information from you, to enable them to give you some cost indications and an outline of the cover that you would be able to obtain in return for your premium payment.

It may be useful to use the services of a provider such as ourselves, who may be able to make you aware of multiple options and opportunities for either improving your cover or reducing your costs (or perhaps both).

Having access to a range of options located in a single source may save you considerable time.

For example, if you are concerned about caravan insurance cover for caravans located in a known flood risk area, using our expertise may enable you to obtain a picture of the general marketplace, taking into account several insurers’ perspectives.

It is perfectly possible, if you already have cover, that your existing insurance is providing you with insurance for caravans at a price that is perfectly commensurate with other market options.

On the other hand, if you do not subject your existing policy to periodic testing against competing alternatives, you may never be able to be sure that you still have an appropriate deal.

If you are new to this domain and are seeking some first quotations, then having in-depth expertise available may prove to be invaluable to you.

So, getting a static caravan insurance quote may be quite important. Getting it from an appropriate source, such as ourselves, may prove to be equally so.

If you are a member of a caravan club, you may have heard some of the other club members talking about their caravan insurance cover.

You may have been surprised at the premiums they said they were paying for cover roughly equivalent to your own.

You may also have eventually found out that their insurance deals seemed to be better than yours because their caravan club membership allowed them to claim a discount on their premiums.

If your cover doesn’t provide you with a discount for your club membership then maybe it’s time you thought about changing your caravan insurance cover for two reasons:

  • some insurance providers will reward you with discounted premiums if you are a member of a recognised club; and
  • having a look about at what’s on offer may also highlight a number of other areas where you may be able to benefit from premium discounts.

Helpful measures

One area where this is particularly relevant is surrounding the security of your caravan and its contents.

If you are a security conscious and responsible caravan owner then taking some common sense precautions may help to reduce risk to your caravan. Reduced risk may lead to reduced premiums, depending on your provider.

So, for example, if you have a touring caravan this could include steps like:

  • fitting tracker devices;
  • keeping your caravan off the public highway when not in use;
  • using hitchlocks and wheel clamps when your caravan is unattended.

In fact some providers may feel so strongly about the benefits of preventative measures like this that they may include the use of hitchlocks and wheelcamps as a mandatory part of their terms and conditions of cover.

With a static caravan the steps could include:

  • choosing a site with no history of flooding;
  • opting for a site with a good anti theft and security record;
  • storing your caravan in a recognised secure location over winter.

Maximise savings

So, a look at the internet based caravan insurance marketplace may show you that with some cover for caravans, there may be a number of discounts available in addition to caravan club membership.

If you are already taking these precautions but not getting a discount with your present caravan insurance, then the only thing you may have to do to save some money is change caravan insurance cover provider. So what are you waiting for?

You may not normally think of insurance in exactly affectionate terms! Yet the chances are that by contrast you are fond of your caravan. Caravan insurance cover may be one way of ensuring that it is protected.

Caravans are precious

Irrespective of the type of caravan you have, it is probably an important aspect of your life.

Whether you have a tourer, motorhome, trailer tent or static caravan, it may play a significant part in your annual leisure activities. If it is damaged or out-of-action then your holidays and short breaks may be severely affected.

That’s one reason why caravan insurance cover may be so important – it typically allows you to pay for the restoration of your vehicle quickly so as to make it available to you again as fast as possible.

The other reason is, of course, financial! If you are not insured when your caravan suffers a misfortune then your bank balance may suffer severely.

Different types – different insurance

Each of the caravan types will have risks unique to it. So, for example, you’re not very likely to have a road traffic accident with your static caravan!

Therefore there are policies designed for each of the major classes of caravan.

These policies are typically not transferable. So for example, you could not use a trailer tent policy to provide cover for your tourer caravan.

In fact if you significantly change the patterns of your usage of the caravan, it might be sensible to check with the caravan insurance provider to see if there are any implications. An example may include if you start renting out your caravan to others for holiday use.

Caravan insurance UK for externals and internals

Caravans are different to a car. They provide accommodation and typically contain furnishings, fixtures and fittings. When you’re using them on holiday they may also contain a relatively large amount of your personal belongings including possibly some expensive items.

Caravan insurance cover needs to cater for damage to the external elements of your caravan, such as its bodywork and structure, against things such as accidents and environmental problems such as storms and flood.

It also needs to offer you protection against theft and vandalism to those contents and internal fixtures, which may prove expensive to repair or replace.
The good news is that getting good value cover for your caravan need not be a time consuming exercise. It’s typically easy to obtain an online quotation for caravan insurance cover from the websites of specialist providers such as ourselves where you can also view a range of options for policies and benefits.

If you looking for competitively-priced insurance for your caravan, backed up with a professional service, then you’ve come to the right place! Our caravan insurance cover is available online and over the telephone so whether you prefer to look for a caravan policy on the internet or speak to a real person, we can help find a policy that may suit your needs.

What information do you need?

Whether you speak to someone or fill in an online form to get a quote, insurers may typically ask for the following information:

  • your name, address and age;
  • the type, age and make of your caravan;
  • whether the caravan is in good condition;
  • where the caravan is kept.

The last point may be particularly important because insurers can use the address of the site to assess the risk of your caravan becoming a victim of flood or malicious damage.

Structural risks

Just as you may insure your own home from structural risks, your caravan insurance cover may be framed in a similar way. Providers vary according to the risks they cover, but a static or touring policy may typically relate to the following perils:

  • earthquakes, floods, storms etc;
  • fire;
  • theft;
  • accidental damage and malicious damage.

There are a number of things that you may do to prevent these risks as a responsible caravan owner, which your caravan insurance cover provider may insist upon. For instance, fitting a wheel clamp and hitchlock to your tourer caravan may be a basic requirement from the point of view of doing your bit to avoid theft.

If you have a static caravan, your insurer may insist that the heating system be drained before you shut the van up for the winter, to avoid damage caused by burst or leaking pipes.

General maintenance to the structure of a touring or static caravan may also be required to keep the van in the best possible condition.

Contents cover

Caravan insurance cover for contents may also be included in the quotes you get. When you cast your mind over the many items that you take on holiday, you may be surprised at how much they are worth. If you have any expensive belongings, you may wish to look into separate cover as some providers may impose a limit on the amount that can be claimed for a single item.

For claims for theft of items from the caravan, there may be exclusions on the cover which mean that the insurer may only pay out if there is evidence of forcible entry to the van.

Are there any discounts?

If you have no claims bonuses on other policies, you may find that insurers may offer a similar discount that mirrors the reward that other insurers have given you for your responsible attitude.

The service

Whilst you may look over the details of the different policies and of course the prices when comparing your caravan cover options, it may also be worth considering the service is behind the cover.

Our team of UK based professional and friendly staff are available to help you find caravan insurance cover that ticks all the boxes. Whether you want a quote or just have a simple query, we are always happy to help, so why not give us a call today?
